There are millions of Americans who walk or run outdoors on a regular basis. They usually do it by themselves at odd hours and frequently in isolated areas making them potential targets for canine or human assailants. Incidences of assaults in parks frequently make the headlines because they usually involve a rape.

There is no doubt about the effectiveness of running or even walking to get the heart rate up and burn some calories. Virtually every weight loss program suggests walking or running as a key ingredient in the program.

For busy Americans it also provides a measure of quiet before the storm of a busy work day-a time to reflect and ponder. It is while doing this recreating that you inadvertently put yourself at risk.

Picture this. You are on a relatively isolated stretch of a road or trail, lost in thought, enjoying the scenery and all of a sudden you have company. Out of nowhere two guys are behind you asking for directions and trash talking. What do you do?

Or picture the same scenario only this time it is a couple of dogs that approach at break neck speed barking and growling up a storm. Both of these scenarios have happened to me at one time or another and let me tell you it can be very frightening-the dogs are worse I think!

There really aren't too many options in my opinion other than to carry some non lethal self defense products or run with a buddy or in a group. The latter is often impractical which leaves the self defense products.

There's really a wide variety of products that can help protect you. For the canine protection there's a dog pepper spray and a canine repeller that emits a sound only dogs can hear to chase them away.

The telescopic stun baton works well on both humans and canines. It has a handy carrying case holster that is convenient. A jolt of 800,000 volts will deter anyone or any dog.

Then there's a good selection of pepper sprays that are easy to carry and conceal. Most even have a holster for easy access. Perhaps the best is the Mace pepper gel which has an extended range up to 18 feet and holds up better in the wind.

Some pepper sprays are disguised as lipstick, pagers, or the stunning ring-a piece of jewelry that no one would suspect. Stun guns too are easy to disguise. There are models that look like cell phones, camera cell phones and flashlights.

There is absolutely no reason for you to be fearful when you are out recreating and enjoying the world on your early morning or late evening walk or run. Just be sure to have the right equipment with you-a stun gun and a pepper spray to protect yourself in an emergency.
